I think the book The Giver is gonna be about a perfect community, but not as perfect as it seems. Jonas, the protagonist is a very smart kid that I believe is going to become even smarter. Since the beginning of the book something has being weird like the airplane problem and realizing thing. Jonas is going to receive clues about what exactly what is going on in his community and see who and what is behind all this mystery about this "perfect" society.
I think this statement means that we all teenagers and kids are the future of the world. What Lowry meant when he wrote that, I believe that it was a message for all of us that are gonna be the adults in a possible future. Probably what he wants to tell us is that he are responsible for the Worlds future and we should learn how to take care of it and make our society a good society. Many authors and histories are about the future and sometimes they are bad and sometimes they are good, but there is always this problem about technology and the perfect society, what he wants to tell us is that we as humans in a future when we grow older should be able to be smart and intelligent about what happens around us and be able to do smart decisions so we can our community and free and nice community.
What I predict that will happen in the book is that Jonas is going to very frequently ask himself about this realizing they do in his community. With the pass of time and as he grows older he will receive some hints and clues to realize that something about the way and where he lives in is wrong. He will search for answers with his friends and even go to the outside world and then come back to realize that the society they lived in wasn't so perfect as they thought and will un cover all secrets.
